Palestine: Netanyahu balks at Abbas proposal for Palestinian state borders [Haaretz]

After President Mahmoud Abbas had presented a proposal to the Middle East Quartet, Israel refuses to respond unless under the circumstances which they determine…

“Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas recently provided representatives of the Middle East Quartet with a new proposal on borders for a Palestinian state and security arrangements that Israel would be provided in a peace agreement. The Quartet, which is comprised of the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia, has demanded that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu provide a counterproposal, however Israel has refused to do so, saying that any counterproposal should be presented in direct negotiations with the Palestinians.”
Iran: William Hague seeks joint EU action against Iran over embassy attack [Guardian]

The UK Foreign Secretary reacts with consternation at the recent attack on the British Embassy in Tehran by Student Protestors, specifically seeking action from the EU against Iran.
“Hague will be seeking a common European stand on the mob invasion of the embassy and residential compound on Tuesday by youths he described as "student Basij militia", which operated as shock troops for the regime in suppressing dissent.”
Turkey: Turkey imposes sanctions on Syria [Guardian]

Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, has announced their intent to take the next step in applying pressure on Syria by initiating sanctions.

Turkey has frozen financial assets and cut strategic links with Damascus to ratchet up pressure on the regime of Bashar al-Assad to end its violence against protesters, following the Arab League's decision to impose sanctions on Sunday.
Ahmet Davutoglu, the foreign minister, said Turkey would also block the delivery of weapons and military equipment and suspend a co-operation agreement with Syria until a new government is in place.”

Afghanistan: Afghanistan faces $4bn defence funding shortfall [Guardian]

Having native troops guard Afghanistan, as the US and its allies prepare to pull out of the country, is an expensive prospect. The amount of troops needed to fulfill the function of security, which the West has provided over the last few years to maintain their own interests, outweighs the current government’s fiscal ability to maintain it.

“…a 352,000-strong ANSF is estimated to cost $8bn and US officials have told their European counterparts that Washington is only prepared to foot $3bn of that bill after 2014. Other donors are expected to come up with another $1bn, enough to finance a force of only 220,000 troops.”
Iran: The boys who cry “Holocaust” [Salon Magazine]

Apparently the same neo-con architects of the Iraq war are stepping up efforts to begin yet another. This time the target is Iran and their weapon of choice is the holocaust as Israel is being used as the motive for an attack of this kind in the region.

“As one of the most disastrous wars in our history is coming to an inglorious end, the same neoconservative hawks who dreamed it up are agitating for a new war that would make Iraq look like the invasion of Grenada — and using the ultimate trump card in American politics to silence debate over it.
When hawks begin beating the drums for war in the Middle East, Israel is usually a big reason why. That was true in the run-up to the war in Iraq, and it is doubly true with the current hysteria over Iran. Despite disingenuous claims to the contrary, the only reason the U.S. is even talking about war with Iran is Israel. As the invaluable M.J. Rosenberg, who knows the working of the Israel lobby as only a former card-carrying member can, notes, “It is impossible to find a single politician or journalist advocating war with Iran who is not a neocon or an AIPAC cutout. (They’re often both.)”
