A visiting Libyan delegation which travelled on the aid ship, Amalthea, arrived in the Gaza Strip on Sunday afternoon through the Rafah border. The delegation met with government officials and called for the siege of Gaza to end, adding there was a dire need for international help.

The Amalthea docked at the port of El Arish from where the delegation proceeded by land to the Gaza Strip via the Rafah crossing and was warmly received by Palestinian government officials. Their main objective was to deliver humanitarian aid on behalf of the Gaddafi Charity Foundation as well as the delivery of much needed construction materials that have been prohibited by the Israeli Occupation. The construction materials will be used to rebuild the territory's infrastructure that had been violently destroyed during Israel's Operation Cast Lead, which left over 1,400 dead, many of whom were women and children.

The prime minister of the Palestinian government in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, urged the Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi to visit the Gaza Strip to see first hand the humanitarian situation and to participate in the political efforts to break the siege imposed on it.

Last week the Israeli Navy had quashed any hopes of the Libyan convoy reaching the shores of Gaza and instead forced the convoy to change its course towards Egypt.
