The Israeli occupation yesterday, Wednesday 8 September, released the Palestinian academic Prof Essam Al Ashqar after his detention for one and a half years. Al Ashqar lectures in physics as the Al Najah National University in Nablus. The 52 year-old academic suffers from a number chronic ailments brought on by harsh prison conditions and inadequate medical care. He suffers from acute hypertension and kidney complications. Because of his failing health Israeli interrogators were unable to question him; hence he was confined to administrative detention. Several prisons refused to accept him because of his grave health condition. Al Ashqar spent most of his time in detention in what is known as the prison of Ramleh hospital.
