The Head of the Hamas Political Bureau has met with a Russian delegation in Damascus to discuss matters relating to developments in Palestine.

Khalid Meshaal met Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister, Alexander Saltanov, who headed the visiting delegation, on Sunday 12 December.

A statement from the Hamas media office said that the two leaders looked at the deadlock in the peace process and the difficult conditions faced by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip due to the ongoing siege. The wider situation in the region was also discussed.

The latest meeting took place following the historic visit to Damascus six months ago of Russian President Dmitri Medvedev, when he met Syria's President Bashar al-Asad and Mr. Meshaal. Commentators regard that meeting to have been of great political significance.
