US: Israeli rabbi's remarks offensive

Washington has criticized Shas spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef over remarks that Palestinians should perish from this world.

"We regret and condemn the inflammatory statements by Rabbi Ovadia Yosef," US State Department spokesman Philip J. Crowley said on Sunday.

Lieberman warns of consequences of unilateral independence

E-mail Print

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor LiebermanIsraeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman warned that the establishment of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders would "not end the conflict but shift it to inside Israel," he said.

Lieberman made these statements at the annual Saban Forum in Jerusalem Saturday 14th, in response to the Palestinian Liberation Organization's chief negotiator Saeb Erekat, who said that the Palestinian Authority is seeking the UN's endorsement of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with Eastern Jerusalem being its capital.

Lieberman stated that "a return to 1967 borders and the establishment of a Palestinian state … will not end the conflict." This would rather prompt Israeli Arabs living in the Galilee and Negev to demand autonomy and build stronger ties with the Palestinians, he said.
