The Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, has welcomed the Doha Declaration on Palestinian reconciliation signed by the Fatah and Hamas movements. He expressed hope that the agreement will be implemented through the formation of a national unity government and the fulfilment of the other terms of the agreement, so as to consolidate national unity and contribute to the realisation of the aspirations and desires of the Palestinian people.

In a statement issued by the OIC's media section, Mr. Ihsanoglu said that the implementation of the Doha deal, although intended specifically to reunite the Palestinian political framework, "is also necessary to mobilise support for the Palestine cause in the international arena". He commended the State of Qatar and its Emir for acting as a patron for this "important" achievement, and the Arab Republic of Egypt for its efforts towards bringing about Palestinian reconciliation.

The agreement was signed for Hamas by its political bureau head, Khaled Meshaal; Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas signed on behalf of Fatah. The terms of the deal call for an interim unity government to be formed under the leadership of Abbas, pending a general election.
