Back Middle East Temporary opening of the Rafah border crossing in Gaza

Temporary opening of the Rafah border crossing in Gaza

EXCLUSIVE PICTURES

The Egyptian authorities have announced that the Rafah border in the Gaza Strip will be open in both directions until Thursday morning. This is the first time in two months that the crossing has been opened, enabling thousands of Palestinians to travel abroad for medical treatment, studies or work. The protest which took place in January against the Egypt-Gaza border wall, (when dozens of Palestinians were injured and one Egyptian policeman was killed) resulted in the border being closed arbitrarily, depriving thousands of Palestinians of the most basic essentials.

The following exclusive MEMO photographs portray hundreds of Palestinian families waiting at Gaza's "Saad Sayel" sports hall to cross the border.
